Local Arrangements

Please read the registration page first for schedule and accommodation information for SAS.

Travelling to SAS2000: As suggested by the UCSB visitor page, most people will fly to Santa Barbara, probably by way of Los Angeles.

The Santa Barbara airport page lists the flights to/from Santa Barbara. Be aware that almost all flights to/from Los Angeles are flown with propeller planes, although United Airlines flies jets from San Francisco and Denver to Santa Barbara; America West flies jets from Phoenix. Ask your travel agent for details.

Once you arrive at the Santa Barbara airport, you may telephone 893-2772 and request free shuttle transportation from the airport to Santa Rosa Residence Hall, which is the residence hall for SAS2000 participants. (The shuttle-bus ride is only 5-10 minutes.) The residence hall will also provide return transportation to the airport.

If you are not staying on-campus, contact your hotel for transportation options---taxis are readily available, and there is the SuperRide Airport Shuttle, (805-683-9636), which charges $9.00 - $18.00; advance reservations for the shuttle are strongly recommended.

If you plan to explore the area, you should rent a car, although there is some bus service in the city.

On-Campus Accommodation: SAS2000 participants will be housed in Santa Rosa Residence Hall, which is located just a few steps from the conference meeting site and the beach. Report to the check-in desk of Santa Rosa Hall to obtain your room assignment, key, and dining card. (Important: Upon check out, remember to return your room key to the check-in desk---the fee for a replacement key is $28.00!) Check-out time is 11:00am.

You might wish to bring with you an alarm clock. Each room has a ``hot'' telephone line but no telephone. If you want private telephone use, you must bring your own telephone, cord, and telephone calling card. Of course, there are telephones in the building's lobby. Because bath facilities are shared, a bath robe comes in handy. Nights near the beach can be cool, so a sweater or jacket is recommended.

Breakfasts and lunches will be served in the Dining Commons of De La Guerra Hall; you pay for these with the ``dining card'' you receive when you check into your room. (Exception: breakfast on Sunday morning, July 2, will be served in the Santa Rosa Hall lobby.)

The SAS dinner events on Thursday and Friday evenings will be catered out-of-doors; Saturday's dinner will be served in the Dining Commons of Ortega Hall.

If you lack a dining card, you can purchase meal tickets at the SAS Registration Desk, which will be located at the conference site (Multicultural Center Theatre, University Center Building). In worst case, you can buy a meal with cash at the Dining Commons of De La Guerra Hall.

Off-Campus Accommodation: For reasons of price and location, on-campus accommodation is recommended. But if you prefer to stay off-campus, the UCSB Conference Office suggests these hotels:

Pacifica Suites Santa Barbara

(805)683-6722 (800)338-6722
Please contact the hotels directly to make room reservations. You can find a few more details about the three hotels on the LICS registration page. A more comprehensive list of area hotels is here.

If you stay off-campus, you may purchase lunches at the De La Guerra Dining Commons, which is where the SAS participants will dine.

Parking Permits: If you bring a car to SAS2000, please indicate this fact on your registration form; a parking permit will be issued for your stay.

On your initial arrival to UCSB, please do the following to fetch your parking permit: Stop at the parking kiosk and announce that you are attending the SAS meeting and must go to Santa Rosa Residence Hall to fetch your parking permit. You will be be given a twenty minute pass to park near Santa Rosa Hall. (Please see the UCSB campus map for the location of Santa Rosa Hall.) Proceed to Santa Rosa Hall, obtain your parking permit (and related check-in materials), and park your car in the lot indicated on the parking permit.

Conference Meeting Hall: SAS2000 meets in the Multicultural Center Theatre, which is located in the University Center Building. The SAS Registration Desk will be located outside the Multicultural Center Theatre from 1pm-6pm on Thursday, June 29. You may fetch your registration materials (registration receipt, conference proceedings, etc.) there.

The Weather and Clothing: General conditions are warm during the day, approximate high temperature around 70F (22C), and cool at night, approximate low temperature about 50F (12C). Bring a jacket or sweater for evening use---the SAS reception buffet and banquet will be located outdoors.

Sunrise is about 6:00am, and sunset is 8:00pm. Mornings begin with some mist, but the sun quickly appears. Rain is highly unlikely.

The weather forecast for the next seven days is here.
